[Archived] 3-Alarm Residential Fire in Del Ray Causes $1.4M Property Loss

3-Alarm Residential Fire in Del Ray Causes $1.4M in Property Loss

For Immediate Release: Dec. 7, 2021

On Friday, November 19, at approximately 6 p.m., units were dispatched to the 100 block of E. Del Ray Ave. for a reported structure fire. The 3-alarm fire required extensive operations throughout the night and Saturday morning from Alexandria Fire Department first responders and partners from surrounding jurisdictions.

AFD’s Fire Marshal’s Office conducted an origin and cause investigation and determined that the fire was accidental and originated on the first floor of one of the two units in the residential structure. Due to extensive fire damage, an exact source of ignition was difficult to determine; however, the probable cause of the fire is attributed to an overloaded electrical outlet where several appliances were connected. The case will remain open at this time, pending further investigation with the property owner’s insurance companies.

The American Red Cross assisted two adults and one child from one of the units with relocation; the residents of the second unit – two adults and an infant – confirmed alternative accommodations on their own. No residents or first responders were injured as a result of this incident. A cat is still unaccounted for at this time.

The residential structure was condemned, and the Fire Marshal’s Office notified the Office of Code Administration. Property loss is estimated at a total of $1.4 million.
