Alexandria Police Department Mourns the Passing of Retired K-9 Trajan

Alexandria, VA – The Alexandria Police Department is sad to announce the passing of retired K-9 Trajan.  Trajan was a beloved member of the department, serving from May 2012 until April 2020.  Officer Doug Serven, Sr. was his handler.  Trajan peacefully passed away on October 4, 2021.

K-9 Trajan was certified by the U.S. Police Canine Association in patrol, tracking and explosive detection.  He had multiple suspect apprehensions in armed robbery and burglary cases and assisted patrol by searching buildings, tracking suspects, and finding evidence.  Trajan also kept the Alexandria community safe by conducting explosive sweeps for special events.  He also assisted Arlington County Police with the Marine Corps Marathon.

APD K-9 Trajan was 11 years old.  He will be missed.

Doug Serven, Sr. retired in 2020 after 35 years of dedicated service as an APD officer and K-9 handler to 6 police dogs.  Today, his son, Officer Doug Serven, Jr., carries on the family tradition as a K-9 handler to patrol dog, Axl.
