[Archived] City of Alexandria Provides COVID-19 Updates; July and August COVID-19 Case Analysis; AHD Releases Updated Vaccine Strategic Framework

For Immediate Release: September 10, 2021

Help end the pandemic by wearing a mask over both your nose and mouth, washing your hands frequently, and getting vaccinated. Approximately 1 in 20 Alexandrians who have tested positive for COVID-19 have required hospitalization, so without these critical steps, additional lives may be at risk.

July and August COVID-19 Case Analysis

The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) conducted an analysis of July and August resident cases of COVID-19 by age group. Anyone eligible for vaccination is strongly encouraged to get vaccinated. In advance of an anticipated authorization this fall, AHD is collaborating with schools and community partners to finalize plans to vaccinate children ages 5-11. Those who feel sick, regardless of vaccination status, should get tested as soon as possible.

  • This data represents Alexandria residents with COVID-19 whose illness was reported to the Health Department during July and August, 2021 and not the onset date of illness.
  • Distribution of cases by age remains relatively consistent over the summer months. There was a slight increase in cases among children, which is expected as they continue to participate in camps, school, and other activities where they are unable to practice physical distancing.

AHD Releases Updated Vaccine Strategic Framework

In anticipation of fall booster shots, third doses for the immunocompromised, vaccinations for those 5-11 years of age, and ongoing first doses, the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has developed a Fall/Winter 2021 Vaccine Strategic Framework. This Framework highlights AHD's top strategies to efficiently and equitably vaccinate all eligible community members. As outlined in detail, AHD will coordinate with vaccination partners to ensure vaccines are widely accessible throughout Alexandria for all populations; employ Point of Distribution (POD) plans to administer vaccines through large scale events; support moderately and severely immunocompromised residents with third dose information and vaccinations; empower the public to receive booster doses; operationalize a plan specific to the pediatric population; and implement a multi-channel, multilingual vaccine communications and outreach plan.

Fully Vaccinated: Total number or percent of people who have completed the recommended series of a given vaccine product (i.e., two doses of the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or one dose of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine).

Partially Vaccinated: Total number of people who have received the first dose of a two-dose vaccine course but have not yet received the second dose.

Continue following measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 even after vaccination. Get tested if you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. If you test positive, help loved ones and neighbors by informing your close contacts using “ What to Do If You Get Sick” guidance, which is available in Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, and Farsi or this brief video
