For Immediate Release: May 20, 2021
During Early Intervention Awareness Month in May, the City of Alexandria highlights the importance of early intervention in a child’s development of basic skills during everyday activities and routines, and reminds residents that services are available via telehealth platforms during the pandemic. The Parent Infant Education (PIE) Program provides early intervention support and services to Alexandria families to help their child(ren) with developmental challenges or delayed development. Examples of support include service coordination, developmental therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work services, speech therapy and vision services for children from birth through age two.
Typically, these services are provided in the home or community in which the child learns and plays. During the pandemic, PIE services are offered primarily through telehealth platforms, such as video or telephone calls. PIE provides videos illustrating physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language therapy via telehealth.
Any infant or toddler in Virginia who is not developing as expected or who has a medical condition that can delay typical development is eligible to receive early intervention support and services under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Alexandria residents with concerns about the development of their child(ren) birth through age two can call 703.746.3363 for services. Starting intervention early can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to learn new skills, overcome challenges and increase success in school and life.
Visit the Parent Information Education webpage for more information about early intervention services.
