For Immediate Release: May 18, 2021
Help end the pandemic by wearing a mask over both your nose and mouth, washing your hands frequently, and getting vaccinated. Approximately 1 in 20 Alexandrians who have tested positive for COVID-19 have required hospitalization, so without these critical steps, additional lives may be at risk.
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) COVID-19 dashboard shows that on Monday, May 18, there were zero new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Alexandria. This is the first 24-hour period in which zero positive cases were reported since December 26, and only the fifth time since the first COVID-19 cases were reported in Alexandria in March 2020. The 7-day moving average of positive cases has been on a downward trend since the beginning of April 2021, and is currently at its lowest point since April 2020 at 5.7. As vaccinations increase, the 7-day positivity rate has been steadily decreasing and has reached a low of 2.6%. The daily number of tests being performed in Alexandria has also been steadily decreasing.
Residents who have lost employment due to COVID-19 are encouraged to review the list of employers who are hiring, which is updated weekly. The Alexandria Workforce Development Center (WDC) is hosting a virtual “Meet the Employer” event with Extended Stay America, Thursday, May 20 and Thursday, June 3, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. to learn about new positions and locations, and meet with hiring teams for on-the-spot interviews. WDC also has several workshops coming up to help residents train and prepare for employment, including job interviewing skills, job searching skills, transferable skills and breaking into cybersecurity for youth. WDC also offers coaching and financial assistance for job searches and career development. All resources take place online, are free, and registration is requested. Visit the WDC’s job board for a complete list of job opportunities.

Continue following measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 even after vaccination. Get tested if you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. If you test positive, help loved ones and neighbors by informing your close contacts using “ What to Do If You Get Sick” guidance, which is available in Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, and Farsi or this brief video.
