[Archived] City of Alexandria Provides Annotations for ALL Alexandria Race and Social Equity Resolution for Community Discussion

For Immediate Release: May 4, 2021

The City of Alexandria announces an online, annotated version of the ALL Alexandria: Committing to Race and Social Equity resolution, adopted by City Council in January. The resolution acknowledges racial inequity in the past and present and commits to adopting practices and policies that promote racial and social equity. The annotations provide additional information, historic background, and resources for phrases and terminology used throughout the resolution. The City is providing these additional resources to increase knowledge and understanding as our community begins its racial equity journey.

“We really want the resolution to be a living and learning document that provides resources for the community to engage more deeply with difficult and complex topics related to race and equity,” said Race and Social Equity Officer Jaqueline Tucker.

As a result, some annotation content may be emotionally and intellectually challenging.  Working toward addressing race and social equity in Alexandria will expose difficult, honest and uncomfortable information. The City’s intent is to create a space where everyone can engage bravely, thoughtfully and empathetically in conversation around race.

The ALL Alexandria resolution also highlights the importance of collaboration between City government, community members and other stakeholders as the City moves forward in establishing goals and implementing a framework to ensure that City policy decisions and practices advance race and social equity for all Alexandrians.

ALL Alexandria is the City’s formal commitment to race and social equity in Alexandria for all races, religions, countries of origin, sexual orientations, ages, genders and abilities. The goal of ALL Alexandria is to reduce and eliminate disparities and inequities experienced by all residents, especially those in communities of color and other groups who have been historically and systemically marginalized.
