[Archived] City of Alexandria Approved for $1.7 Million in FEMA Funding to Hire Staff for Future Vaccination Expansion

For Immediate Release: March 19, 2021

The City of Alexandria requested and received approval for $1.7 million in new funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support staffing of future vaccination capacity in Alexandria. With support from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, FEMA will fund the hiring of 112 temporary staff for vaccination sites to increase vaccinations once vaccine supply increases.

The funding is available as a result of a recent Presidential memorandum to extend federal COVID-19 support to states, where FEMA will fund certain vaccine distribution costs. Due to the urgent need and anticipated vaccine supply increase later this month, the City will hire short-term, temporary employees to serve as medical, administrative, and related support staff to operate vaccination sites.

“Over the past year of COVID-19 response, the partnership between the City and the Health Department has been invaluable,” Alexandria Health Director Dr. Stephen Haering said. “This vaccination staffing expansion is just another example of that close partnership and our collective commitment to ending this pandemic. By working together, we can ensure Alexandrians are vaccinated equitably and efficiently.”

The City is currently recruiting for and hiring positions to supplement existing efforts to efficiently operate vaccination sites, including vaccinators, vaccinator assistants, vaccinator supervisors, registrars, flow monitors, health screeners, enrollment specialists, and logistics support positions. In addition, the City will hire public health outreach workers who will increase capacity to implement the Health Department’s health equity initiatives.

An information session will take place on Saturday, March 20 to provide details about the available positions. More sessions may be added depending on demand. Participation is free, but registration is required to attend.
