[Archived] Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities Seeks Community Input on Del Ray Gateway Project/Colasanto Spray Park Design

For Immediate Release: February 24, 2021

The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will redesign the existing Colasanto Pool, closed since 2010, at 2700 Mount Vernon Ave. The City has selected and hired a design team led by LSG Landscape Architecture through a procurement process, which concluded at the end of 2020.

The City invites the community to provide input on the project through a virtual meeting on Thursday, March 4 at 7 p.m. Input received at the meeting will be used to direct the project, which will go through an iterative community design process. For questions, please see the project web page or contact Bethany Znidersic, Acting Division Chief, at bethany.znidersic@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.5492.

LSG will build on the recommendations from The Del Ray Gateway Project community survey started in 2016 and the City’s 2012 Aquatic Facilities Study. The 2012 study recommended that the old pool be converted into a spray park. The design project will focus on the redesign of the current pool. Future projects will design and construct other components of the Del Ray Gateway Project site including The Nancy Dunning Memorial Garden.

The improvements will be designed and built through the City of Alexandria’s Capital Improvement Program and a Community Matching Fund partnership with The Del Ray Gateway Project.

The City anticipates that the design will be completed by the end of 2021. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2022.

Register in advance for this meeting at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_dBUvxQRuSZ6aLoUa37Mq6Q. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

In response to CDC guidance related to COVID-19, there will be no in-person public meetings and all engagement will be conducted virtually through online platforms pursuant to Virginia Code Section 2.2-3708.2(A)(3), the Continuity of Government ordinance adopted by the City Council on June 20, 2020 or Sections 4-0.00(g) in HB29 and HB30 to undertake essential business until further notice.
