[Archived] City of Alexandria Expands Capital Bikeshare to West End Neighborhoods

For Immediate Release: December 1, 2020

The City of Alexandria will expand the Capital Bikeshare Program to the West End several years ahead of schedule, starting in early 2021. The City will purchase seven previously deployed stations in good condition, which will accelerate the system expansion by two to five years. The interim stations, which are anticipated to be installed in January and February, will be replaced with new equipment once grant funding becomes available.

City staff is finalizing locations for stations and coordinating an installation schedule. The general locations recommended in Alexandria’s Transportation Master Plan (p. 55) are being used as a starting point for the new locations and are being considered in coordination with the bikeshare operator and adjacent property owners. Members of the Traffic and Parking Board supported these locations during discussion at their meeting on October 26.

Visit alexandriava.gov/Bikesharing for more information about specific locations and timing for installation, or general information about bikeshare in Alexandria.
