For Immediate Release: September 16, 2020
On Tuesday, September 15, at approximately 10:40 p.m., units from the Alexandria, Fairfax County and Arlington County Fire Departments were dispatched for a report of a multifamily residential building fire in the 4700 block of W. Braddock Rd. Upon arrival, crews discovered fire in a bedroom of an apartment on the second level of the building, and the fire was quickly extinguished.
Residents of the unit informed fire marshals that the fire started in a bedroom when a candle fell onto the bed. A fire investigation confirmed the residents’ statement, and the fire is classified as accidental in nature.
The unit where the fire originated was condemned due to fire and water damage, and residents were able to find alternative accommodations. An adjacent unit was also condemned due to water and overhaul damage, and the Red Cross assisted the residents in finding alternative accommodations. Two additional units sustained minor water damage but were not condemned. Residents from these units chose to find alternative accommodations on their own.
A total of 9 people and 3 animals were displaced as a result of the fire. The fire caused an estimated $75,000 in damages.
