[Archived] City of Alexandria Provides COVID-19 Updates; Map of COVID-19 Testing Locations; Participate in Alexandria’s Virtual Birthday

For Immediate Release: July 10, 2020

The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) remind everyone that you are safest at home. Older adults, persons with underlying medical conditions and pregnant women are at greater risk for severe disease and are advised to minimize potential exposures as much as possible. Please keep at least 6 feet of distance from others. Everyone is required to wear a face covering in most indoor public settings. Your neighbors and loved ones are counting on you to stop the spread of COVID-19.

New Resource: Map of COVID-19 Testing Locations

AHD has developed a guide of locations throughout the City and neighboring communities where residents -- especially those without primary care physicians or insurance -- can get tested for COVID-19. The map shows locations within Alexandria and lists the medical centers alphabetically, along with information about cost; whether or not they offer evening and weekend hours; if photo ID is required; and if payment is due at time of service. Alexandrians who need help getting a photo ID can get it with support from the group Project ID. It is best to contact your doctor with questions or concerns about COVID-19, since there are Alexandria physicians who are testing existing patients but have declined to be listed publicly. The providers listed are accepting new patients and willing to be listed publicly.

Participate in Alexandria’s Virtual Birthday Celebration

Due to COVID-19, Alexandria will be celebrating its 271st birthday a little differently this year. Residents are invited to join local singer and songwriter Lea on Saturday, July 11, at 7 p.m., to sing “Happy Birthday” to Alexandria together from their porches, stoops, balconies or windows. Lea will lead the singalong via live stream and will perform other music from some of her favorite places around Alexandria. The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and the Navy Commodores have contributed online performances, Alexandria’s poet laureate KaNikki Jakarta has written a poem, and the Office of Historic Alexandria has provided an 18th century cake recipe to mark the occasion.

COVID-19 News Release Moves to Weekdays

Going forward, this COVID-19 news release will be published each weekday unless there is a major announcement on weekends. Daily data will continue to be available at alexandriava.gov/Coronavirus.

20 New COVID-19 Cases and No New Fatalities Added in Alexandria

The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Alexandria is now 2,439, including 57 fatalities. Detailed data, including data on age, race and ethnicity, is available through links at alexandriava.gov/Coronavirus. The virus that causes COVID-19 is spread both by people who are symptomatic and by those who do not know that they are infected. Everyone is safest at home. This is especially true for those in high-risk populations (such as older adults, persons living in long-term care facilities, and those with serious underlying medical conditions). If you must go out, please maintain 6 feet of distance from others, wear a cloth face covering, and always carry hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol with you. Everyone must do their part to stop the spread.
