[Archived] City of Alexandria Co-Sponsors Virtual Town Hall: Facing Racism. Demanding Change.

For Immediate Release: June 1, 2020

The City of Alexandria and community leaders will come together for the first in a series of virtual town halls in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, a black man, who died at the knee of a white police officer in Minneapolis on May 25. The first virtual town hall will be held Tuesday, June 2, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The town hall, “Facing Racism. Demanding Change.” will honor Floyd, and provide an opportunity for residents to share their voices. The event will feature a panel of civic leaders, including Living Legend and Activist Joyce Rawlings; Councilman John Taylor Chapman; Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings Jr.; and Alexandria youth leader Kamryn Powell. The panel will be moderated by the City’s Race and Social Equity Officer, Jaqueline Tucker. Community breakout sessions will be held during the town hall to address next steps.

The event, co-sponsored by ACT for Alexandria, will be hosted online at zoom.us/j/95162556812 or by phone at 312.626.6799 (Meeting ID 951 6255 6812). It will also be streamed live and recorded at facebook.com/ACTforAlexandria.

The town hall series will focus on racial justice, racial trauma and healing. This is part of Alexandria’s commitment to acknowledging and dismantling the systematic and institutional racism that pervades all institutions, resulting in unequal outcomes for people of color in areas such as education, health, employment, transportation, housing, environment, income, wealth and the arts.
