[Archived] City of Alexandria Provides COVID-19 Updates; Thank You, Alexandria; Guidance for Office Buildings

For Immediate Release: May 29, 2020

The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) remind everyone that you are safest at home except for essential trips such as food purchases and medical care. If you must leave your home, wear a cloth face covering around others and keep at least 6 feet apart from others whenever possible. Your neighbors and loved ones are counting on you to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Thank You, Alexandria

Northern Virginia entered Phase One of the Forward Virginia reopening blueprint today because our communities have worked together to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Although we still have a long way to go and we all must stay vigilant, we should also take a moment to recognize everyone who has played a role in this milestone. Watch a special video message from the Alexandria City Council to thank essential workers, businesses, teachers, volunteers, public health and healthcare workers, City staff, and every resident who has helped our community so far.

CDC Issues Employer Information for Office Buildings

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided COVID-19 Employer Information for Office Buildings, for employers who are preparing office buildings for returning workers. The updated guidance provides information on creating COVID-19 workplace health and safety plans; checking building systems to ensure they are ready for reopening; strategies to ensure physical distancing and other preventive measures; changing the way people work to avoid COVID-19 infection; and more.

54 New COVID-19 Cases and No New Fatalities Added in Alexandria

The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Alexandria is now 1,941, including 44 fatalities. Detailed data is available through the links at alexandriava.gov/Coronavirus. (A May 28 news release incorrectly stated that there were 3 new COVID-19 fatalities reported in Alexandria that day; the correct number was 2.)

As Northern Virginia moves into Phase One of the Forward Virginia blueprint, it is important to note that there is still community transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19 and everyone is safest at home. This is especially true for persons at higher risk for severe illness, including those over the age of 65 and those with underlying medical conditions. Those who do go out are reminded to remain 6 feet apart from others; wear a cloth face covering when physical distancing cannot be maintained outdoors and at all times in indoor public spaces; and wash hands frequently.
