[Archived] City of Alexandria Reminds Residents to “Take 10 to Complete the 2020 Census”

For Immediate Release: May 12, 2020

The City of Alexandria encourages all residents to participate in the 2020 Census. Completing the Census questionnaire is safe, easy, and typically takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Occurring only once every 10 years, the Census is the best opportunity to count all residents in Alexandria regardless of age, race, ethnicity, citizenship status, or any other demographic characteristic. An accurate count makes sure all residents are fairly represented in federal and state government and that $675 billion in federal resources are allocated correctly across state and local jurisdictions. Now, more than ever, Alexandria needs every resident to be counted, to ensure our community gets the funding it needs. For anyone who has not already completed their Census survey, now is the time to get counted.

To help make sure all residents are counted, the City is looking for volunteers to help spread the word about the 2020 Census. The City’s Complete Count Committee is training community members to become Census Ambassadors, who will help residents learn about the questions on the Census; how the Census will take place; and how the Census benefits Alexandria. To provide Census Ambassador training during the COVID-19 pandemic, the City has created a Virtual 2020 Census Ambassador Training presentation that can be viewed from the City's 2020 Census page. Community members are encouraged to volunteer to become Census Ambassadors, watch the presentation, and help spread the word about the importance of Alexandria having a complete and accurate count.

Alexandria Library is also hosting a series of virtual information sessions to discuss the 2020 Census and the importance of ensuring EVERYONE in Alexandria is counted.

Every household is required by federal law to respond to the 2020 Census. The personal information you provide is kept completely confidential, even from other government agencies. The survey is available in 13 languages, with language support available for 59 additional languages upon request. The 2020 Census survey can be completed online, by phone at 844.330.2020, or by completing the paper survey you received in the mail. It only takes 10 minutes to complete the survey. Take 10 to complete the Census today!
