[Archived] City of Alexandria Provides COVID-19 Updates; Don’t Delay Emergency Care; New Demographic Dashboard; Emergency Child Care; #FriendlyFriday

For Immediate Release: May 8, 2020

The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) strongly urge everyone to follow state orders to STAY HOME except for essential trips such as food purchases and medical care. If you must leave your home, keep 6 feet apart from others when in public, and wear a cloth face covering if you cannot maintain physical distance. Your neighbors and loved ones are counting on you to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Don’t Delay Emergency Medical Care

It is safe to visit a hospital, emergency room, or other care site if you have a medical need to do so.  If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call or text 911 immediately. Delaying treatment can be a dangerous decision, especially if you have signs of a heart attack or stroke. Area hospitals and emergency rooms have taken precautions to provide a safe environment for all patients – including screening processes and separate areas for those suspected of having COVID-19. (If you are not having an emergency, always call your doctor or clinic first to ask if there are any precautions you should take before arriving.)

New COVID-19 Demographic Dashboard

The City has published a new COVID-19 demographic dashboard. This dashboard shows Alexandria's COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths by age, race, sex, and ethnicity, compared to Alexandria’s population. The data comes from the Virginia Department of Health and the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

COVID-19 Emergency Child Care Services for Essential Workers

The City is developing temporary child-care options to support employees who are required to work during the COVID-19 crisis. This includes workers in healthcare, the food industry, transportation, pharmacies and other essential services. Please complete the forms for parents if you are an essential worker in need of child care, or complete the form for providers if you are interested in providing child care during this crisis. Visit the City’s COVID-19 Emergency Child Care webpage for details and forms.

Virginia Resilience Week: #FriendlyFriday

During Resilience Week Virginia (May 3-9), the City reminds residents that building resilience can help individuals and communities bounce back from difficult experiences, like the COVID-19 crisis. Today is #FriendlyFriday. Empathy, respect for others, kindness and cooperation are qualities linked to resilience. When you show someone that you care about them, it can help them and you feel connected to a social support system. Social support is exceptionally important for maintaining good physical and mental health. Psychological Medicine suggests that support derived from friendship is important in promoting mental health resilience in adolescence and adulthood. The stronger your friendships are, the greater your resilience will be in difficult times. Visit the City’s Resilience Week page for ways to enjoy #FriendlyFriday
