The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) strongly urge everyone to follow state orders to STAY HOME except for essential trips such as food purchases and medical care, and keep 6 feet apart from others when in public. Your neighbors and loved ones are counting on you to stop the spread of COVID-19.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns the public not to ingest disinfectant products; never apply the product to themselves or others; and never use these products with food. The agency also cautioned users to never mix products unless specified in the use directions, as certain combinations of chemicals will create highly toxic acids or gases. The agency also advises people to wash their hands after using a disinfectant. This minimizes the user’s exposure both to the chemicals in the disinfectant and to the virus the product is intended to kill. Two legal organizations are providing resources to residents dealing with COVID-19 related issues. The Virginia Poverty Law Center's web site provides answers to many employment, eviction and legal questions, provided in both Spanish and English. The Center also has an eviction hotline: 833-NOEVICT (833.663.8428). The Legal Aid Justice Center provides recorded videos on topics ranging from immigration concerns to price gouging. During a crisis like COVID-19, the risk for intimate partner and domestic violence increases. The City and Doorways for Women and Families are hosting Embrace Your Voice, a virtual poetry share event on Facebook honoring survivors of sexual assault, on April 29 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Works written by survivors will be read and shared in honor Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, also in April. The Alexandria Sexual Assault Center encourages residents to invite others to attend the event and learn more about risks and how to support survivors and victims of sexual assault anddomestic violence.
The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Alexandria is now 547, including 15 fatalities. Detailed data is available through the links at alexandriava.gov/Coronavirus. It is critical for all community members, even those who don't have a diagnosed illness, to stay home except for essential trips such as brief visits to the pharmacy, doctor, or grocery store.
