The Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities (ACPD) is seeking applications for the Gerry Bertier Scholarship, and nominations for the John Duty Collins III Outstanding Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Award, and two Disability Awareness Awards presented in conjunction with the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. The deadline for scholarship applications and award nominations is May 8.
Gerry Bertier Scholarship
Applications are being accepted for this merit-based scholarship, awarded to an Alexandria resident or student with a disability who is seeking post-secondary education.
Nominations are being sought for the following awards:
John Duty Collins III Outstanding Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Award
This award recognizes an individual who advocates for and contributes to the promotion of equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in Alexandria.
Disability Awareness Awards (in conjunction with the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce)
Category 1 - This award recognizes an Alexandria business that commits to promoting positive awareness among employees of the needs of customers with disabilities or otherwise makes special efforts to render goods or services accessible to persons with disabilities.
Category 2 - This award recognizes an Alexandria business that commits to hiring persons with disabilities or aids employees with disabilities to further their careers.
The awards will be presented at a reception currently scheduled for June 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at City Hall (301 King St.). Check the listing on the City Calendar as the date approaches to see if there are any changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
