[Archived] City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities Suspends Operation of Remaining Recreation Centers

For Immediate Release: March 20, 2020

The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) strongly urges all community members to change their daily behavior now to reduce risk from COVID-19 Coronavirus, particularly to protect our most vulnerable populations. The City of Alexandria has already taken proactive measures to further reduce risk and encourages all organizations and individuals to take necessary steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) is taking further steps toward this goal.

In addition to the previous service adjustments, Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will now be closed through April 10 beginning Monday, March 23. Visit alexandriava.gov/Recreation for the complete list of service adjustments.

All parks, trails, fields, and playgrounds remain open to the public. RPCA and AHD believe that safe, socially distant opportunities for exercise are crucial for our community to maintain both physical and mental health. Patrons are requested to practice social distancing and wash their hands or use a hand sanitizer to protect themselves and others. Since any outdoor amenity is only as clean as the last person who touched it, patrons are asked to wipe down any playground or other outdoor equipment with disinfectant wipes before and after use. Signage with guidelines is being posted at City playgrounds, courts and park entrances to remind the public how they can prepare themselves, protect their community and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
