[Archived] City of Alexandria Encourages Residents to Complete the 2020 U.S. Census

For Immediate Release: March 12, 2020

Beginning March 12, Alexandria residents will join households across America as they begin to receive invitations to complete the 2020 Census survey. The results of the survey will provide the most complete count of current U.S. residents, which will determine congressional representation; inform hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding; and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade. As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the Census counts every person living in the U.S. every 10 years regardless of age, race, or citizenship status. Participation in the Census brings resources to local communities and guarantees fair representation in government.

Participation in the Census matters. In 2019 alone, Alexandria received more than $36.7 million based on the results of the 2010 Census. Those funds financed important community programs, including Alexandria City Public Schools lunch and breakfast programs, Medicaid, the Safe Routes to Schools program, literacy programs, Assistance to Firefighter Grants, the Head Start program, highway planning and construction, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, mental health services and more.

Households are required by federal law to complete the Census survey, so please take a moment to do so. It is safe, easy and fast. Personal information shared on the survey is confidential, even from other government agencies.
