Eco-City Alexandria wishes you a happy, sustainable
holiday season! We know it’s a busy time filled with decorating,
entertaining, and baking, so we've put together some suggestions to help reduce
your environmental footprint this season. It’s easy to use these
actions to make your holidays “greener!”
- Recycle
your cut tree by placing it curbside after the holidays. Trees are
collected, ground into mulch and available
to Alexandria residents in the Spring.
- Locally
grown food travels fewer miles and creates fewer carbon emissions so visit
your Farmers’
Market for festive treats, fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, and more!
- Left
over compostable
fruits, vegetables and organic materials, can make your soil rich and
reduce waste sent to the landfill. Use it in your garden or drop it
off at one of the City’s Food
Waste Drop-Off Stations.
- Shop
close to home for the holidays! Alexandria was named a Top
3 Best Small City in the U.S. 2019 by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’
Choice Awards for its unique boutiques, restaurants and specialty shops.
- Attend
the Alexandria
Tree Lighting or other
local events and when decorating for the holidays, choose
high-efficiency, long lasting LED lights connected to a timer.
- Consider
a donation to a non-profit and join Holiday
Sharing 2019 to sponsor a family or to participate in the Alexandria
Community Toy Drive.
- Give
the gift of an experience! Minimize wrapping and shopping with a gift that
allows your loved ones to spend quality time experiencing something new,
such as a shared museum
trip, a recreation
class or a volunteer
opportunity in the community.
- Donate
gently used items like a warm winter coat to a local nonprofit reuse
store, shelter or coat
drive.
