For Immediate Release: November 18, 2019
Alexandria has been ranked the fourth top digital city of its size in the United States, according to the 2019 Digital Cities Survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government. The annual survey evaluates cities' approaches to using technology to tackle social challenges, enhance services, strengthen cybersecurity, and more. This is the 15th consecutive year Alexandria has been ranked in the top 10, including two years in first place.
"Alexandria’s local government continues to embrace technology and processes that enable staff to provide services more efficiently and with greater public engagement," said City Manager Mark Jinks. "We are grateful to the Center for Digital Government for recognizing Alexandria as a Top Digital City yet again and proud to have received the award for 15 consecutive years."
This year's winners were recognized for finding creative ways to leverage their technology investments and redefining the role of the public-sector technology leader at the local level. Digital Cities Survey judges cited Alexandria’s increased use of digital maps and live data streams to present residents with detailed information about ongoing initiatives and real-time events. Judges also recognized the implementation of interactive performance dashboards; the City’s continuing commitment and progress toward improving cybersecurity; and the selection of Alexandria as the home of Virginia Tech’s new Innovation Campus, which will be geared toward fostering technology talent and building the region’s growing innovation economy.
The City will formally receive the award at the National League of Cities conference in San Antonio, Texas, on November 21. For more information about the Digital Cities Survey, including a full list of winners, visit the govtech.com Digital Communities page.
