City to Host Bike Rodeo at Alexandria’s First Traffic Garden on November 2
Calling all kids! On Saturday, November 2, the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee will host a bike rodeo to celebrate the opening of the City’s first traffic garden. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Jefferson Park (301 Hume Avenue).
Traffic gardens are miniature towns made up of small-sized streets where children can engage in active learning about roadways and traffic safety. Children practice walking, bicycling, and “driving” along roadways and through intersections and crossings, all in an environment free of motor vehicles.
Last March, the City hosted a community workshop where children were invited to design their own traffic garden. After careful review, City staff combined the work of three neighborhood girls as inspiration for the final design. Special thanks to Lucy, Maisie, and Alli for their design expertise!
At the opening event, kids will be led through a bicycle rodeo course and practice key skills, such as starting and stopping, turning, and using hand signals. Bicycle checks and helmet checks will be provided, and residents can speak with City staff about other exciting Vision Zero initiatives that are underway.
This event is suitable for children ages 4-11. Grownups are also welcome! For more information, contact Christine Mayeur at christine.mayeur@alexandriava.gov. To learn more about the City’s Vision Zero Program, visit alexandriava.gov/VisionZero.
