[Archived] Alexandria Beautification Commission Announces 2019 Award Winners

For Immediate Release: October 29, 2019

On October 16, the Alexandria Beautification Commission held its annual Beautification Awards Ceremony at The Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria. The event honored residents, businesses, and organizations for their exceptional contributions to the beautification of Alexandria through landscaping, architecture and sustainable design.

Mayor Justin Wilson, Councilwoman Del Pepper, Councilwoman Amy Jackson, and Councilman Canek Aguirre presented the winners with their award certificates. Mayor Wilson remarked, “Alexandria continually ranks high on many lists as a top place to live and work, in large part due to community participation and the Commission’s beautification efforts.”

A new special merit award category, Excellence in Planning and Design, was added this year for a large project that benefits the whole community by creating a more livable city. The Commission recognized the King Street Corridor Initiative for its transformation of the waterfront and the historic retail corridor. Awards were also presented in six existing categories:

The Alexandria Beautification Commission was established to advise the Alexandria City Council and facilitate community efforts to improve the City of Alexandria’s architectural and landscape environments. The Commission works in collaboration with the City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. Its mission is to promote the beautification of the City of Alexandria through landscaping, architecture and sustainability. The Commission sponsors the Alexandria Beautification Awards each year.
