[Archived] Portion of Holmes Run Trail Closed for Repairs

For Immediate Release: October 25, 2019

A portion of Holmes Run Trail has been temporarily closed to repair a pedestrian bridge with unstable footings. The bridge is located near access to Holmes Run Trail along Holmes Run Parkway in the Tarleton neighborhood.

During routine park amenity inspection by staff from the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, it was found that the bridge footings were unstable due to soft soil and loose rock below the footing. An inspection by a civil engineer from the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services deemed the bridge to require immediate repair to ensure pedestrian safety.

A detour route has been established and signs have been posted indicating the closure and detour. The detour crosses Holmes Run across from Ben Brenman dog park, continues north through Ben Brenman Park and east along Duke Street to meet the Holmes Run Trail past the bridge closure.

Visit alexandriava.gov/Recreation for updates about the extent of the closure as they become available.
