[Archived] City of Alexandria to Begin Resurfacing of Seminary Road

For Immediate Release: October 8, 2019

Next week, the City of Alexandria, through its Public Works Services Division, will begin milling and resurfacing Seminary Road from North Quaker Lane to Library Lane. The Seminary repaving work will implement design changes to Seminary Road that were approved by City Council last month.

Resurfacing of the first segment of Seminary Road, from Library Lane to N. Howard Street, will be conducted as a night paving operation, from October 14 through October 18 (weather permitting). The hours of operation will be between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Residents who may be directly affected will receive advance notice by way of hand delivered letters, and/or displayed construction project signs. The City recognizes that night paving will be an inconvenience to residents living along this section of Seminary Road. However, night paving of Seminary west of N. Howard Street will enable the work to be completed more quickly and safely, due to that section’s proximity to I-395. The City contractor will be working under a noise variance permit and will take steps to mitigate noise as much as possible.

Once the night work is complete, the City will begin resurfacing the second segment of Seminary Road, from N. Howard Street to N. Quaker Lane. This daytime paving operation is currently scheduled to take place from October 21 through October 28 (weather permitting), between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Please be aware that there may be short-term lane closures and parking restrictions on the side streets. City staff will be onsite managing the project, and at the end of each workday, roads will fully reopen to traffic. All work excludes weekends and will be performed weather permitting.

After the area of Seminary east of N. Howard has been repaved, crews will continue working to ensure the final changes reflect Council’s decision on the road design proposed as part of the City’s Complete Streets program. The changes will take the road from four travel lanes to two travel lanes, a center turn lane, and buffered bike lanes. Additional pedestrian improvements, including crosswalks, islands and a temporary sidewalk will also be added. Seminary Road was identified in the City’s Transportation Master Plan for potential improvements to ensure safety, mobility and accessibility for all roadway users. The road was also pinpointed for safety improvements during the City's Vision Zero Action Plan process.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work to improve the City’s infrastructure.
