The Alexandria City Council has proclaimed October as "Energy Awareness Month," in response to the effects of climate change, including the greater frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as rising coastal waters, record-breaking rainfall and high-temperatures. This proclamation encourages the community to sustainably manage energy use; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; reduce environmental pollution; and take action in response to the global climate emergency.
During October, the City is hosting special events to help residents find out how to use energy efficiently and learn more about the benefits of electric vehicles.
Be Energy Aware -- October 16, 7-8 p.m.
Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave.This training session, presented by the Virginia nonprofit Local Energy Alliance Program, will provide information on energy savings opportunities at home and how to complete a DIY home energy audit using a portable thermal camera and Kill-A-Watt meter, which can be rented from Alexandria branch libraries.
EV Ride & Drive -- October 19, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave.This event, held in partnership with Virginia Clean Cities, will feature a presentation on Alexandria's EAP 2040 electric vehicle (EV) goals and Virginia's electric vehicle market and trends, and will provide an opportunity to ride in or test drive an EV.
During Energy Awareness Month, follow the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services' Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages for tips and resources on how to sustainably manage energy use and reduce one's carbon footprint at home, in the workplace, and while commuting.
