[Archived] Wreath Laying and Memorial Service at Ivy Hill Cemetery

For Immediate Release: September 30, 2019

The Alexandria Fire Department will observe National Fire Prevention Week on Friday, October 11 with a memorial service and wreath laying at 11 a.m. The solemn ceremony is held each year at Ivy Hill Cemetery, located at 2823 King St., to honor those who have died in the line of duty and members of the Fire Department who have passed away during the preceding 12 months.

For the memorial service, the cemetery’s entrance will be framed with a display of fire apparatus. Ivy Hill’s park-like setting offers a quiet place to reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters throughout the City of Alexandria’s history.

“Words cannot express the sadness we feel when we lose a loved one. However, we all find some comfort in knowing each of our brothers and sisters followed their dreams and were well respected by their peers and the community,” said Acting Fire Chief Corey Smedley. “The Alexandria Fire Department will always remain dedicated to never forgetting those we’ve lost by honoring our vision statement of ‘Dedicated to our Community, our Profession and Each Other.”

The media and public are invited to attend the ceremony. Uniformed members of the Alexandria Fire Department, Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, and Fire Department retirees will be present to honor their fallen brothers and sisters.

In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, located at 2932 King St.
