[Archived] City of Alexandria Recognizes National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

During National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, and year-round, the City of Alexandria encourages the public to understand the importance of cybersecurity and to stay safe and secure online.  

Security breaches have become a regular occurrence for credit card companies, insurance companies, universities, and other corporations and institutions. Cybercriminals do not discriminate: they target vulnerable computer systems whether they are part of a large corporation, a small business, or belong to a home user. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility in which everyone plays a part. Practicing good online habits at work, at home and in public will help keep personal information and other data secure.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s national cybersecurity theme this year, “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.” will focus on key areas, including individual privacy, consumer devices and e-commerce security. The public is encouraged to review the Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. Toolkit, which is a comprehensive guide to promote positive, lasting cybersecurity habits.
