[Archived] Holmes Run Trail Restoration Begins

On July 8, Alexandria received a month’s worth of rain in approximately one hour, which created widespread flash flooding. As a result, Holmes Run stream levels surged over 12 feet causing significant damage to paved and unpaved sections of Holmes Run Trail. The damage has led to the Holmes Run Trail being closed for repairs west of the North Ripley Street crossing.

The first phase of restoration to the trail begins this week with the section from North Beauregard Street to North Chambliss Street. The trail within Dora Kelley Nature Park will be closed to facilitate these repairs. During the repair work, several large trucks and heavy equipment will be present and pedestrians and cyclists should avoid the area. The work is expected to take several weeks.

City staff are continuing to assess the extensive damage between North Beauregard Street and the Ripley Street crossing to develop a mitigation and repair plan. This section of the trail is expected to be closed long-term.

Detour routes have been established for pedestrians and cyclists to travel between North Chambliss Street and North Pegram Street during the trail repair and closure. Further details and closure timeframes will be shared as they become available.
