[Archived] City of Alexandria Seeks Input on Vision for City Hall

The City of Alexandria is seeking community input on the future of its flagship facility through a City Hall Visioning Study. City Hall is the center of civic activity for Alexandrians, is a source of community pride, and will remain the seat of City government.

In addition to the offices of the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager, City Hall houses more than 300 employees in various City departments and agencies. It was originally constructed in 1871, and after many decades of service since its last renovation, major updates are needed throughout the building to better serve staff, residents and visitors.

In 2015, the City developed workplace guidelines that identified current and future space needs for each department residing in City Hall. The findings concluded that not all existing staff and services will fit within a renovated City Hall, and some departments and functions will need to be relocated. The community may be better served by moving some functions to other locations, as well.

Before design and construction begins in 2022, the City will need to complete a Visioning Study to gauge which functions or services are most important to be housed in City Hall. The City’s primary focus is to evaluate how City Hall can best serve Alexandrians in the future. The study will serve as the framework for an implementation plan that will guide these upcoming renovations.

The community is invited to provide online input that, along with other feedback received during this study, will inform the development of potential approaches to the renovation of City Hall.

The draft approaches will be available for public comment at a City Hall Visioning Community Meeting on July 31, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in City Hall, Sister Cities Conference Room 1101 (301 King St.).
