[Archived] City of Alexandria to Host Open House and Virtual Information Session to Help Residents Plan for Upcoming Metrorail Closures

For Immediate Release: May 16, 2019

The City of Alexandria is offering a variety of resources to help residents, visitors, and businesses plan for upcoming Metrorail station closures. In order to perform critical platform reconstruction work, Metro will close all stations south of the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station from May 25 to September 8, as part of its Platform Improvement Project.

On May 22, the City will host an open house to answer construction-related project questions and assist with trip planning. Representatives from the City and its GO Alex program, Metro, DASH, and other entities will be on hand to answer questions about traveling through the region this summer. Metro staff will be available to answer questions about the network of free shuttle buses available this summer, the project work plan, construction noise, and other impacts associated with the project. The Open House will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oswald Durant Arts Center (1605 Cameron St.), and will be drop-in style (there will be no formal presentation at this event).

Following the Open House, the City will hold an online virtual information session, from 8 to 9 p.m., to answer additional questions about the Metro closures. The session will be accessible  on the City’s website and Facebook page.

Panelists from the City and DASH will take questions about preparations for the platform work and station closures, and how customers can plan now to get around during the summer. Questions may be submitted in advance at alexandriava.gov/GOAlex, or asked live during the online session, via social media, text (703.405.8902), or by phone (703.746.3300). A recording of the session will be available online after the session ends.

The City continues to work with DASH, Metro and other partners to provide trip alternatives and planning help for residents and visitors during this summer’s work. Metro’s online trip planner, which includes station specific information about travel between May 25 and September 8, is available at wmata.com/platforms. From May 8 through 24, Metro outreach teams will be at affected Metrorail stations notifying customers of the closure and answering questions. During the first two weeks of the closure, Metro’s customer service street teams, including bilingual staff, will also be available at all closed Alexandria Metrorail stations to offer assistance in person.

Residents with concerns about construction impacts should contact Metro Customer Relations at 202.637.1328, weekdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or submit concerns on Metro's website at wmata.com using the Customer Comment Form.

In addition to the Metro trip planner, the City offers travel planning assistance to residents through GO Alex, Alexandria’s resource for transportation alternatives. A full list of expanded travel options–including new shuttle service, enhanced bus service, and additional water taxi and King Street trolley trips−to mitigate the impact of the station closures is available at alexandriava.gov/GOAlex. In addition to transit options, the City has also implemented traffic engineering solutions, such as expanding HOV hours along key corridors and technology that will help keep buses on schedule this summer. Full details are available on the City’s Platform Improvement Project web page.
