For Immediate Release: May 10, 2019
The City of Alexandria is seeking residents to assist with the 2020 Census Complete Count Committee by volunteering for 2020 Census-related events and activities that will encourage residents to participate in the upcoming Census. Businesses and local organizations are also encouraged to partner with the Committee to help distribute informational materials about the Census at their locations.
Volunteers and residents are also asked to share their comments related to the Census. To volunteer for the Complete Count Committee, or to provide input, complete the 2020 Census Complete Count Feedback Form.
The next meetings of the Alexandria Complete Count Committee will be held on May 22 and June 27. Both meetings will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Oswald Durant Arts Center (1605 Cameron St.). The focus of these meetings will be to brainstorm approaches for engaging Alexandria residents in hard-to-count groups around the 2020 Census.
In September 2018, City Council approved Resolution 2842, establishing the Alexandria Complete Count Committee with the hope of encouraging all residents to participate in the 2020 Census. Working with City staff, the Committee will develop and implement an outreach strategy focused especially on communities that have been historically undercounted.
The 2020 Census Complete Count Initiative is the opportunity to collect the most accurate count of U.S. residents for the next decade. An accurate count is vital to ensuring that all residents are fairly represented in both federal and state government, and helps the City get the resources needed to provide public services for all its residents. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that every person not counted in Alexandria results in the loss of over $20,000 worth of funding per person over the span of 10 years.
