[Archived] City of Alexandria Celebrates Building Safety Month in May with April 26 Kick-Off Event

UPDATED: City of Alexandria Celebrates Building Safety Month in May with April 26 Kick-Off Event

For Immediate Release: April 25, 2019

NOTE: Due to forecasted rain on the day of the event, the kick-off celebration will be moved to the Vola Lawson Lobby inside City Hall.

The City of Alexandria invites the public to kick-off Building Safety Month with an event on Friday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Market Square (301 King St.). The annual awareness month recognizes the importance of building safety and the professionals who implement them. This year’s theme is “No Code. No Confidence.”

The free event will feature a proclamation by Mayor Justin Wilson and remarks by City Manager Mark Jinks, followed by lunch and exhibits from City departments and the local building community. The event will also feature a free training session, “Significant Changes to the ICC A117.1 - Accessibility Standard - 2009 Edition.”

Building Safety Month is a public awareness campaign offered each year to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create and sustain safe and sustainable structures. Founded by the International Code Council, Building Safety Month is celebrated in May by jurisdictions worldwide. The campaign reinforces the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system.
