[Archived] City of Alexandria Launches 2020 Census Complete Count Initiative with First Committee Meeting on March 28

For Immediate Release: March 25, 2019

The first meeting of the Alexandria Complete Count Committee for the 2020 Census will be held on Thursday, March 28, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.). These Complete Count Committee meetings will continue through April 2020, and will focus on local outreach strategies and task implementation related to the 2020 Census. The March 28 meeting will be an opportunity to discuss the purpose of the committee, and the goals and schedule for the upcoming year.

In September 2018, City Council approved Resolution 2842, establishing the Alexandria Complete Count Committee to encourage all residents to participate in the 2020 Census. Working with staff, the Committee will develop and implement an outreach strategy focused especially on communities that have been historically undercounted.

The 2020 Census will begin one year from Census Day 2019 on April 1. In preparation, the Complete Count Committee will work to ensure that all Alexandria residents are aware of the vital importance of the 2020 Census and are ready to respond to the count with understanding, knowledge, and confidence.

The 2020 Census is the opportunity to collect the most accurate count of United States  residents for the next decade. An accurate count is critical to ensuring that all residents are fairly represented in federal and state government and that Alexandria gets its fair share of resources to provide public services. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that any person not counted in Alexandria results in the loss of $20,000 of funding over 10 years.
