[Archived] City of Alexandria Prepares for Spring with Neighborhood Cleanups, Pothole Patrol, Mulch Delivery

UPDATED: This news release was revised to correct an error in the price of mulch delivery.

For Immediate Release: March 13, 2019

The City of Alexandria is preparing for warmer weather with its annual spring beautification efforts, including pothole repair, bulk trash collection, and mulch delivery.

Spring Cleanup is Coming

The Spring Cleanup is Alexandria’s annual special collection for bulk trash and metal items. City trash and recycling customers can set out a variety of unusable oversized items for curbside pickup on select dates in April and May. Visit the Spring Cleanup page to find your Spring Cleanup collection date, a list of eligible materials, and information on preparing items for collection.

Order Mulch Online

The fall leaves and Christmas trees collected by the City over the last few months have been ground into mulch, and residents can now place orders online for mulch deliveries. Deliveries begin in April and run through June. Delivery dates and times are limited, and appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a $65 delivery charge.

Mulch is also available for free pickup at 4215 Eisenhower Ave. Residents who wish to pick up mulch should note that mulch bins are only refilled from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Visit alexandriava.gov/YardWaste for more information.

Spring Pothole Patrol

The City began repairing potholes early this year, but the official spring pothole blitz begins March 25. Potholes form when water seeps into tiny cracks in pavement and expands during freezing temperatures. Crews will work diligently to repair streets damaged during the winter months. After the spring pothole blitz, the City will begin completion of the Fiscal Year 2019 paving schedule. Potholes can be reported via Call.Click.Connect. , either online or by calling 703.746.HELP (4357).

Street Sweeping

Citywide street sweeping has resumed at full pace, and will continue through October. Crews keep neighborhoods and commercial corridors clean and protect waterways from debris runoff by regularly sweeping 560 lane miles. Please observe posted “No Parking” restrictions on street sweeping blocks, as well as any temporary “No Parking” signs that may be posted in some neighborhoods to help facilitate debris removal. Additionally, new this spring are restrictions along Patrick and Henry Streets to allow for more regular street sweeping along these thoroughfares. To request additional street sweeping, please use Call.Click.Connect. or call 703.746.HELP (4357).
