[Archived] Alexandria City Council Adopts 2019 Council Work Program

For Immediate Release: March 4, 2019

At its regular meeting on February 26, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted a 2019 City Council Work Program. The Work Program identifies the policies and initiatives City Council is committed to working on during the calendar year. Included in the Work Program is a monthly schedule of Master Plan updates, policy work sessions and joint work sessions with other City and regional bodies, and strategic reviews of City departments. The Work Program will serve as a roadmap to guide City Council and staff work, and will be a “living document,” subject to periodic amendment.

“This Council has worked together and agreed on areas of focus for this calendar year,” said Mayor Justin Wilson. “We know other priorities will arise and need to be addressed, but the Work Program will keep us focused on the important needs of our City and its residents.”

Top priorities of the Work Program include policy work sessions on implementation of the Housing Master Plan and Strategic Facilities Master Plan; a joint work session with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority to discuss their housing portfolio and the future redevelopment of those sites; a joint work session with the Alexandria School Board to discuss high school capacity and the capital improvement program; and departmental strategic reviews to discuss economic development, tourism and marketing, and funding of early childhood programs.

On January 26, City Council held a planning retreat with the goal of discussing and developing the components of an annual City Council Work Program. The professionally facilitated retreat included a staff presentation on the City’s multi departmental, long-range planning work program and a series of exercises that identified goals and priorities and assisted City Council in prioritizing initiatives. Before the retreat, City Council received the 2019 Departmental Initiatives and Projects Report, which identified the upcoming priorities for each City department.
