[Archived] City of Alexandria Provides Updates on Winter Weather

For Immediate Release: January 13, 2019

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Alexandria and the surrounding area, until midnight on Sunday night, January 13. Six to 12 inches of total snow accumulation are expected, and travel by vehicle or on foot may be treacherous. City crews completed removal of snow from all primary routes and most secondary routes on Sunday, but additional snow accumulation has required crews to return to primary routes.

City refuse and recycling collection will not take place on Monday, January 14, and will be delayed one day this week from the normal schedule.

For Monday, January 14, City government facilities normally scheduled to open before 10 a.m. will not open until 10 a.m., and courts will be closed. Any exceptions will be noted on the City’s website at alexandriava.gov. Non-emergency City personnel may take unscheduled leave or telework with supervisor approval. Emergency personnel should report as scheduled. For Alexandria City Public Schools operating status, visit www.acps.k12.va.us.

Responding to severe weather events is one of the City’s top priorities. City crews clear snow from more than 560 lane miles of roadway, 20 miles of City-owned walkways and trails, and 44 acres of municipal parking lots or City-owned squares. Removing snow and ice from this large network of streets and sidewalks takes time, hard work, and communication between residents, business owners, and the City.

Roads are plowed by priority. Snow emergency routes are plowed first, followed by secondary routes, intermediate routes, and then residential streets. The City’s SnowReport tracking system allows residents to view plowing priorities, check the status of individual streets, and submit concerns.

Clearing sidewalks, driveways, and entrances is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, occupant, community association, or business. Based on the level of this storm, responsible parties will have 24 hours to clear paths from the time snowfall ends.
