[Archived] Alexandria Electoral Board to Hold Open Houses on Proposal for Two New Voting Precincts

The Alexandria Electoral Board will hold open houses on Thursday, January 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, January 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, to receive comments and answer questions on a proposed ordinance to establish a new voting precinct in the West End and a new voting precinct in Eisenhower East. Both events will be held at the Voter Registration Office (132 N. Royal St.).

The proposed changes will enable precincts to absorb future growth from continued residential development in the West End and Eisenhower East and reduce the size of the two largest precincts, Tucker School and Lee Center. Nearly 5,000 voters would be moved closer to their polling places, and over 20,000 voters would benefit from being in smaller precincts with shorter wait times to vote.

• In the West End, two existing precincts would be split into three, creating the new Olympus precinct with the Olympus Condominium (6301 Stevenson Ave.) as the voting location. The existing precincts and their polling place locations are Beatley Library (5001 Duke St.) and Tucker School (435 Ferdinand T. Day Drive). In addition, about 100 voters from the Cameron Station precinct (200 Cameron Station Blvd.) would be transferred to the Tucker School precinct.

• In Eisenhower East, the Lee Center precinct (1108 Jefferson St.) would be split in two, creating the new AlexRenew precinct with the AlexRenew Environmental Center (1800 Limerick St.) as the voting location. In addition, about 140 voters from the Lyles Crouch precinct (530 S. Saint Asaph St.) would be transferred to the Lee Center precinct.

Virginia Election Law dictates the legal requirements for new precincts and polling places.

Timeline for Proposed Precinct Changes

• January 3, 6 to 8 p.m., Community Open House with members of the Alexandria Electoral Board.
• January 5, 10 a.m. to noon, Community Open House with members of the Alexandria Electoral Board.
• January 8, 7 p.m., City Council Meeting. The Alexandria Electoral Board's recommendation will go to City Council on January 8. If City Council votes to proceed, the proposal would go on Council's January 12 docket for public hearing and final adoption.
