[Archived] City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for New Year’s Day, January 1, 2019

For Immediate Release: December 20, 2018

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 1, 2019, in observance of New Year’s Day.

Resource Recovery: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on Monday, December 31, but not on Tuesday, January 1. Collection services normally scheduled for January 1-3 will be delayed one day from the normal collection day. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collections Drop-off Center (3224 Colvin St.) will be open on December 31.

Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, December 31, with animal viewing beginning at noon. The Animal Shelter will be closed on Tuesday, January 1.  

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will be closed on Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1. The Teen Wellness Center (3330 King St.) will be open on Monday, December 31, and closed on Tuesday, January 1.

Historic Alexandria: All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on Monday, December 31 except the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, which will be open from 2 to 5 p.m.  All City museums will be closed on Tuesday, January 1. Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703.746.5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703.746.4911; the emergency mental health services or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1.888.832.3858; and the sexual assault hotline at 703.683.7273.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, December 31, and will remain closed on Tuesday, January 1. The Alexandria Law Library (520 King St.) will be closed Monday, December 31 through Wednesday, January 2.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Tuesday, January 1. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on January 1.   

Impound Lot: The City’s Impound Facility (5249 Eisenhower Ave.) will be closed on Tuesday, January 1.

Recreation and Art Centers: All City of Alexandria recreation and art centers will be closed on Tuesday, January 1.

Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed for Winter Break from Monday, December 24 through Wednesday, January 2.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, the Alexandria Circuit Court, the Alexandria General District Court, and the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (520 King St.), will be closed on Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1. The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed on Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1.

Transit: On Monday, December 31, DASH will operate regular weekday service on all of its routes, including the King Street Trolley. As part of the “First Night” New Year’s Eve festivities, DASH will also provide limited trolley service between the Durant Center and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial from approximately 5:30 to 11 p.m.

On Tuesday, January 1, regular DASH bus service will not operate, however, the free King Street Trolley will run on its regular schedule, every 10-15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., between the King St.-Old Town Metro Station and the Potomac River Waterfront.
