For Immediate Release: November 13, 2018
All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday, November 22, and Friday, November 23, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Resource Recovery: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of November 19, including Thanksgiving Day, November 22. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m., in order to clear routes early for the Annual Turkey Trot. Collection staff have indicated their preference to perform collection times earlier on Thanksgiving Day in order to spend Thursday evening and Friday with their families, rather than having all day Thursday off and working on Friday.
Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed for business on November 22, but will still host its annual Kongs-giving event from noon to 1:30 p.m., to create special holiday treats for homeless animals. The shelter will be open on November 23, from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m., with animal visiting beginning at noon.
Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon on Wednesday, November 21, and will remain closed on November 22 and 23. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed on Thursday, November 22, and Friday, November 23.
Historic Alexandria: All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on November 22. On November 23, all museums will be open during regular hours except for the Archaeology Museum (which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and the Black History Museum (which will be closed). The Black History Museum will have special hours on Sunday, November 25, for “Museum Shop Sunday,” from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call 703.746.4554 or visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Thursday, November 22, and Saturday, November 24. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on November 22 and 24. All normal parking restrictions will be enforced on Friday, November 23.
Recreation and Art Centers: All City of Alexandria recreation and art centers, including the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility and the Torpedo Factory Art Center, will be closed on November 22.
