[Archived] City of Alexandria Launches Phase Two of Environmental Action Plan Update at November 14 Kickoff Meeting

For Immediate Release: November 9, 2018

The City of Alexandria invites the public to attend the launch of the second phase of the City’s Environmental Action Plan (EAP) 2030 update process on November 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., at MacArthur Elementary School (1101 Janneys Lane). The EAP serves as a comprehensive roadmap for Eco-City Alexandria, the City’s initiative to guide decision-making as Alexandria develops into a thriving, environmentally sustainable community.

This kickoff meeting will give community members the opportunity to offer suggestions and ask questions about the plan, its progress, and the Phase Two update process. The event will be streamed live on the Transportation & Environmental Services Facebook page for those who cannot attend in person.

In 2017, the City collaborated with the Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission (EPC) to launch a two-phase EAP update process in response to several factors, including the City’s accomplishments since the 2009 adoption of the EAP, emerging technology and evolving infrastructure needs, and new approaches to reducing the City and community’s impact on the environment. This new document will provide a refreshed, informed, and responsive framework for environmental decision making over the next several decades.

On October 13, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted the EAP Phase One Update, which identified short-term goals (through Fiscal Year 2023) and action items for five EAP focus areas: Energy, Climate Change, Green Building, Land Use and Open Space, and Solid Waste.

Phase Two will be dedicated to establishing short-term goals and action items for the remaining five focus areas: Transportation; Air Quality; Water Resources; Environment and Health; and Implementation, Outreach and Education – as well as developing mid- and long- term goals for all 10 focus areas. The two documents will be combined and submitted to Council as a comprehensive report in late Spring 2019.
