For Immediate Release: October 12, 2018
The Alexandria Health Department will host a flu shot clinic on Saturday, October 20, from 9 a.m. until noon, at the Leonard “Chick” Armstrong Recreation Center (25 W. Reed Ave.). Free flu shots are available for all adults and children ages six months and older. All members of the community are welcome; no insurance or proof of residency is required.
The flu is a serious illness that affects millions of Americans every year. An annual flu shot can reduce illness and hospitalizations, protect pregnant women, and can be lifesaving for children. For the approaching 2018-2019 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone six months and older before flu begins spreading in the community (typically by the end of October).
This flu clinic also provides the Health Department with an opportunity to vaccinate a large number of people in a field setting. The event helps protect our community by allowing the City to test capabilities for responding to public health emergencies. Please visit the CDC FAQs page for more information about the flu and flu vaccine.
