[Archived] City of Alexandria Recognizes National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

For Immediate Release: October 2, 2018

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the City of Alexandria encourages the public to stay safe and secure online and understand the importance of cybersecurity.

Security breaches have become a regular occurrence for credit card companies, insurance companies, universities, and other corporations and institutions. Everyone is affected when an organization is compromised. Cybercriminals do not discriminate; they target vulnerable computer systems whether they are part of a large corporation, a small business, or belong to a home user. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility in which everyone plays a part. Practicing good online habits at work, at home and in public, will help keep personal information and other data secure.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s national cybersecurity theme this year, Stop.Think.Connect., is aimed at increasing the understanding of cyberthreats and empowering the public to be safer and more secure online.  The public is encouraged to review the Stop.Think.Connect. Toolkit, which provides resources on how talk with children about being online, steps for protecting your home from cyberattacks, information about online gaming, and more.

For more information, visit the Department of Homeland Security’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month webpage, or the National Cybersecurity Alliance website.
