The City of Alexandria reminds taxpayers that their 2018 Vehicle Personal Property Tax is due October 5. Vehicles registered in the City for all or part of the 2018 calendar year are subject to the tax. Payment in full must be received or postmarked by October 5 to avoid penalties and interest.  Lines at City Hall may be longer just prior to the due date. The Finance Department offers several convenient ways to pay. To avoid waiting in line, taxpayers can pay by phone or online. Returned checks/eChecks are subject to a $35 fee in accordance with state law.

Vehicle owners who have not received a personal property tax bill should contact Personal Property Tax at vehicletax@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.3995, or the City’s Treasury Division at payments@alexandriava.govor 703.746.3902, Option 8. Taxpayers who have had a change of address and have not previously reported this change to the City should contact Personal Property Tax before the October 5 due date to have a bill provided.

The penalty for late payment is 10 percent of the net tax and late filing penalty, or $10, whichever is greater. Interest accrues at an annual rate of 10 percent for the first year and five percent for each year thereafter, beginning October 6, 2018, and continues until all taxes and penalties are paid.

Administrative fees ($50 for delinquent balances $50 or greater, and $25 for balances between $20 and $49.99) will be assessed against balances not paid on or before November 15. There is no fee for accounts with balances less than $20.

New Decal Location

Based on a change in State regulations, please note the new location of the State safety inspection and City vehicle decals.

• If State safety inspection decal is in lower left corner of windshield, apply City vehicle decal inside front windshield ¼ inch to right of State safety inspection decal.
• If State safety inspection decal is in middle of windshield and expires later in year, apply City vehicle decal inside front windshield in lower left corner, leaving about seven inches from the edge of windshield, for the State safety inspection decal’s new location.
