Alexandrians can help raise awareness about he impact of substance abuse and mental illness during a National Recovery Month Community Celebration on Sept. 26, 4-7 p.m., at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria.

This event will spread the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treat is effective, and people can and do recover.

Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover.

The 2018 theme: Join the Voices for Recovery Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community, explores how integrated care, a strong community, sense of purpose, and leadership contributes to effective treatments that sustain the recovery of persons with mental and substance use disorders.
