For Immediate Release: September 15, 2018 (Meeting Date Correction)
The Park and Recreation Commission will hold a public hearing to receive a
recommendation from staff on the NOVA Parks Partnership discussions for Great
Waves Waterpark Thursday, September 20, 7 p.m., at the Charles Houston
Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St. Following the public hearing, the Commission
will continue with its regular monthly meeting.
The City of Alexandria entered into a long-term lease agreement, expiring in
2021, with NOVA Parks (Northern Virginia Park Authority) to build and operate
Great Waves Waterpark located at 4001 Eisenhower Ave. The City held a community
process to receive input from the community on the best use for the Great Waves
Waterpark location in 2017. Resulting from the community planning process, City
Council endorsed seven (7) priorities identified by residents and stakeholders
and directed the City Manager to further explore partnership opportunities with
NOVA Parks in cooperation with the Park & Recreation Commission in December
2017. Information on the planning process and partnership discussions may be
found by visiting the Park
& Recreation Commission website.
