[Archived] Alexandria Police Lieutenant Graduates from FBI National Academy

For Immediate Release: September 14, 2018

Alexandria Police Lieutenant Michael May graduated from session 273 of the FBI National Academy on September 13, 2018. The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for US and international law enforcement managers. Participation is by invitation only through a nomination process. Participants are drawn from every US state and territory and from international partner nations.

Lieutenant May is the commander of the Traffic Safety Section and the commander of the Hostage Negotiation Team within the police department. Lieutenant May joined the police department in 1997. During his tenure with the department he was assigned as a School Resource Officer and a Residential Community Support Officer. Upon his promotion to sergeant he served as a first line supervisor in Patrol, the Community Support Section, and the Property and Evidence Section.

Lieutenant May lives in the city and enjoys serving his fellow Alexandria residents. Working with the city’s youth has always been the most rewarding part of his career.  He was awarded the Kiwanis Officer of the Year award as a result of his outreach to youth within the city.  Recently his work with the traffic safety section is helping the city meet vision zero goals.

“The Police Department is very proud of Lt. May and his graduation from the FBI National Academy,” said Chief Michael Brown "We anticipate he will be applying the valuable policing concepts he learned at the academy when he returns to the City of Alexandria. Well done Mike."

Lt. May joins the following current Alexandria police commanders who have also completed the FBI National Academy: Chief Michael L. Brown, Captain Chris Wemple, Captain Shahram Fard, Captain Don Hayes, Captain Shirl Mammarella, and Captain Monica Lisle.
