For Immediate Release: August 22, 2018

Jim Banks PhotoAlexandria City Attorney James L. Banks will step down effective September 7, to become General Counsel of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM).  SHRM is the world's largest human resources membership organization, with 300,000 members in over 165 countries.

"We thank Jim for his service to the City of Alexandria and wish him good luck in the next chapter of his career," said Mayor Allison Silberberg.

"It's been a pleasure to work closely with Jim on a wide variety of projects and initiatives," said City Manager Mark B. Jinks.  "Jim has capably developed and led an office of attorneys and legal support staff who represent our community's interests effectively and professionally."

Banks has served as City Attorney since his appointment by City Council in 2009.  He has helped modernize the City Charter and Code, led the acquisition of land in support of the City's Waterfront Plan, and successfully defended the City in major litigation.

"Working for the City of Alexandria has truly been the highlight of my career, and I will miss this work very much," said Banks. "It is with a sense of sadness that I will be leaving this very fine organization but also with a sense of excitement for a new opportunity and the challenges it will bring."

City Council will consider the appointment of an Acting City Attorney at its regular meeting on September 11.
