[Archived] Recycling and Trash Management in City Parks

For Immediate Release: August 02, 2018

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) is preparing to implement the second phase of an initiative to install additional recycling containers and rearrange some existing recycling and trash containers in City parks. Existing and new containers will be placed near park entrances, parking areas and high use park facilities, including ball fields, playgrounds and picnic areas.  The goal is to standardize the trash receptacles and move them to locations that make more sense for usability and access for sanitation trucks. This will help make parks look cleaner and improve the trash collection efficiency. Addition of recycling containers will promote recycling of waste.

The second phase work will begin in late August 2018 with relocation of existing containers. Installation of about 28 new recycling containers is scheduled to be completed before the spring of 2019. Current phase mostly involves containers in parks located on the west side of the City. Waterfront and east side parks were included in the first phase of this initiative completed in fiscal year 2018.

This initiative supports the recommendation of the City’s 2013 Citywide Park Improvement Plan and the 2015 Neighborhood Park Improvement Plan to relocate trash and recycling containers to more accessible locations within the City’s Parks. Addition of recycling containers in parks also supports the recommendations of Alexandria’s Environmental Action Plan.
