[Archived] Alexandria City Council Seeks Community Input on Proposal to Consolidate Boards of Architectural Review

The City of Alexandria will hold two community meetings to discuss the proposed consolidation of the Old and Historic Alexandria District Board of Architectural Review and the Parker-Gray District Board of Architectural Review into a single Board of Architectural Review (BAR).

The first meeting will be held on July 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Alexandria City Hall (301 King St.), in Sister Cities Conference Room 1101. The second meeting will be held on September 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.).

The community meetings will be opportunities for residents to learn about the current BAR review process and provide input on the proposal, which is expected to be reviewed by the Planning Commission and City Council in the fall.

In April, City Council directed staff to initiate a text amendment to the City’s zoning ordinance and study the consolidation of the two Boards. The proposed BAR would oversee both locally-designated historic districts and operate under a common administrative framework. The proposed consolidation would make no changes to the separate boundaries and design guidelines for each district.
